What is QTVR?

QTVR stands for QuickTime Virtual Reality.  It allows you to do what you’ve been seeing on our site.

A common problem panoramas have when making a QTVR movie is called parallax.  Simply put, parallax is the difference in orientation of an object when seen from two different viewpoints.  Example: Close an eye. Now, point to a small object that’s near you. Switch eyes. Your finger isn’t pointing at the same spot. You’ve just experienced parallax.  Actually, you experience it whenever your eyes are open, you just don’t realize it.  Without it, we’d have little to no depth perception.  While it’s a great tool for measuring distances, it can be a nightmare for panoramic photography.  At tree-light, we have the tools, techniques, and technology to eliminate parallax from our QTVR.

If you still have questions about QTVR, I’ve brought the two places you were probably going to check right here:

From Wikipedia:

“QuickTime VR (virtual reality) (also known as QTVR) is a type of image file format supported by Apple's QuickTime. It allows the creation and viewing of photographically captured panoramas and the exploration of objects through images taken at multiple viewing angles. It functions as a plugin for the standalone QuickTime Player, as well as working as a plugin for the QuickTime Web browser plugin. QuickTime VR will play on Windows computers as well as Apple Macintosh computers.

Apple continues to include QuickTime VR in its QuickTime technology. Many software companies create authoring applications to create QuickTime VR content.”

From Apple’s Web Site:

“QuickTime VR moves the photographic image from the flat 2D world into the definitive immersive experience — complete with 3D imagery and interactive components.

QuickTime VR enables viewers to explore virtual worlds using nothing more than a computer and mouse — no cumbersome goggles, headsets or gloves required.

Photographers have embraced QuickTime VR as a terrific way to transport people to different parts of the globe with one mouse click. The corporate world has been quick to seize the opportunity, too. Today thousands of companies use QuickTime VR movies to display their products to best advantage on the Internet.

For education, the possibilities are unlimited. Just think of virtual field trips to view the splendor of such places as the Nile Delta, the Grand Canyon and Olduvai Gorge. Learning can be fun."
